HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 34-year-old Hilo man who nearly drowned while trying to save his son in waters near Brown's Beach passed away on Thursday.
Chris Broussard (34) of Hilo and his 9-year-old son were snorkeling in a tide pool in the Brown's Beach area on Sunday, September 23, when a large wave reportedly swept the boy out into the ocean.
Big Island Police officials say Bruoussard then jumped into the ocean in an attempt to rescue his son.
Bystanders were able to pull the child to safety, but Broussard was found floating face down in the water. Fire rescue personnel took him to the Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday.
Police say they are investigating the case as a fatal public accident.
