Arson investigation opened following Kalihi house fire

KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Police Department has opened an arson investigation following a house fire in Kalihi Tuesday morning.

According to fire officials, the fire broke at 6:10 a.m. in a two-story home located on Leilani Street.

Crews arrived to the scene at 6:14 a.m. and had the blaze under control at 6:32 a.m. The fire was extinguished just after 6:50 a.m.

Officials say a woman, her husband, and their adult son were inside of the home at the time of the fire, but escaped unharmed.

The couple's son, 44-year-old Erwin Aranda, was taken into police custody. He was transported to the Queen's Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.

Damages to the home and its contents are estimated at $75,000.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
