HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The first swell of the winter surf season is expected to arrive late Saturday and Sunday and has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a High Surf Advisory for north and west shores.
The advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for the north and west facing shores of Kauai and Oahu and the north facing shores of Molokai, Maui and Niihau.
Forecasters said 15 to 20 foot face-high waves are possible for north shores, with 8 to 12 foot high waves possible for the west shores. The weather service said dangerous breaking waves could lead to rough surf and hazardous rip currents.
Surf was expected to rise late Saturday and peak Sunday before declining Monday.
The high surf is expected from a large low pressure system far to the north of the islands.
