LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dave Shoji and his Rainbow Wahine volleyball team knew the move to the Big West Conference would bring tough competition. In their conference opener, they got what they expected. UH was pushed to the brink by Cal State Northridge before outlasting the Matadors in five sets.
After dropping the first set 25-22, UH won the second set 25-16 to pull even. However, Cal State Northridge won the third set 25-17, putting them in position to win the match in four. That didn't happen, as the Wahine rebounded with an identical 25-17 score to push the match to a decisive fifth set.
In it, the Matadors had match point at 14-13, but couldn't put it away. UH battled on, eventually winning 19-17.
The Wahine's three-game road trip continues Friday at UC Riverside, before concluding Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.
