One-year-old dies in apparent drowning on North Shore

NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A one-year-old boy is dead after being found unresponsive at a North Shore beach.

Emergency crews rushed to the surf spot known as 'Rock Piles' near Sunset beach shortly before 6 p.m.

Officials say they found an off-duty lifeguard performing CPR on the toddler.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the boy's parents lost track of him for several minutes and later found him floating in the water.

"Initially, it was called in as a missing swimmer and then when they found the child near the shoreline, it was changed over to a near drowning," HFD Captain Carlton Yamada said. "At that time, they were mainly focused on the patient and taking care of the patient."

Police say he later died after first being transported to Kahuku hospital in critical condition.

It's unknown if surf conditions played a part in the accident.
