(HawaiiNewsNow) - The Poepoe Hawaiian Culture Center originated in Japan in 1996 with locations in Tokyo and Nagoya. Now, a new location has opened in the heart of Honolulu offering a variety of Hawaiian culture classes and products.
The founder and director of Poepoe Hawaiian Culture Center is Kazuyuki Sekiguchi, member of the Japanese pop rock group, the Southern All-Stars. Sekiguchi and his wife, Hisako have created the Center in appreciation and sustainability of the Hawaiian culture.
The center will offer classes in 'ukulele, hula, Hawaiian language and Hawaiian quilting. Legendary 'ukulele artists, Herb Ohta and Benny Chong as well as Jake Shimabukuro's ukulele instructor, Dr. Trey and contemporary ukulele artist, Kalei gamiao will teach ukulele. While hula instructors include Maria Schneider and 2002 Miss Aloha Hula, Maria Petersen.
In celebration of the Grand Opening of the center, classes during the month of September are FREE!
The Poepoe Hawaiian Cultural Center is located at 1750 Kalakaua Ave #206 and is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 7pm.
