Car drives into path of Maui's "Sugar Cane" train


HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Maui Police Department says that no one was hurt after a car drove into the path of the oncoming "Sugar Cane" train in Kaanapali.

Police say at about 4:35 p.m. Tuesday, the driver of a Honda sedan traveling East on Puukolii Road failed to come to a stop at the train crossing. The car then drove right into the path of the train. It happened at the intersection of Puukolii Road and Honoapiilani Highway.

The "Sugar Cane" train was traveling in the Honokowai direction.  According to the police report, all of the train's signals were working and all of the standard precautionary measures in accordance with Federal Guidelines were observed by the train's engineer and crew.

No injuries were reported and only minor damages were reported to both the vehicle and the train.
