Staffers surprise Senator Akaka on 88th birthday

PASCO, WASHINGTON (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hau'oli la hanau to Senator Daniel Akaka. Hawaii's junior senator is turning a youthful 88 years old.

Hawaii News Now had a crew in Washington D.C. when Akaka's staff surprised him with a celebration in his office.

The celebration was a rare event; since the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Akaka has preferred small-scale gatherings on what is now a solemn day. This was the last birthday he will celebrate in office.

Senator Akaka retires from his seat in January. Hawaii News Now will have extensive coverage of Senator Akaka's last days in office, both on-air and online at HawaiiNewsNow.com.
