Local Connection: Unemployment Numbers

By: Rick Blangiardi

It's the sort of economic report that gets little attention because it's too complicated.

A list of July unemployment rates in hundreds of US cities.

Worst in the nation, Yuma, Arizona, 31%.

Honolulu came in at 5.7 percent. That turned out to be one of the lowest in the nation. The only comparable city with a lower rate was Omaha.

However, there are a number of smaller cities in the upper plains with even lower rates.

A lower unemployment rate isn't a pain reliever.

You still have the people who are out of work, some of whom have given up looking. And the ones who are working, but still paying bills from when they were out of work.

But summer has brought hundreds more construction jobs. And visitor spending is up more than 20% from last year.

For those who did give up, it's time for a fresh start.

Hawaii's economy is clawing its way back.
