KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Eight people are homeless after an early-morning house fire in Kaneohe.
According to officials, the fire broke at 4:03 a.m. in the back of a home located on Peninsula Place.
A newspaper delivery woman says she was driving in the area when she spotted the flames.
Thirty Honolulu firefighters responded to the scene to discover that flames gutted the single-story home and damaged a neighbor's carport.
Neighbor Candace Tancayo says she grabbed a hose and started battling the flames.
"I was sleeping. All of sudden I heard some rumbling, then I heard some footsteps, then I heard an explosion and then I heard yelling then I heard the word 'fire,'" Tancayo said. "The neighbor was telling everyone, 'Get out, get out! Fire!'"
HFD crews had the flames under control at 4:23 a.m.
Five adults and three children managed to escape from the property unharmed, however, the family's pet dog did not make it out alive.
The American Red Cross is assisting the affected residents.
Total damages to the home and its contents are estimated at $390,000.
Damage to the neighbor's home is estimated at about $25,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
