A Big Island teenager has died after being hit by a semi-truck while crossing Mamalahoa Highway in Paauilo.
The incident happened at about 5:32 p.m. Friday.
The teenage boy who was killed in the crash has been identified by Big Island Police as 17-year-old John Deluz of Paauilo.
Deluz reportedly exited a Hele-On bus that was stopped on the mauka side of Route 19 and ran in front of the bus and onto the road, where he was struck by a 1988 International semi tractor trailer that had been traveling in the eastbound direction.
Emergency medical responders transported Deluz to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m.
Both lanes of the highway were closed while police opened a negligent homicide investigation. It is unknown if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The 22-year-old driver of the semi truck was not injured.
The death was the 27th traffic-related fatality on the Big Island in 2012, compared to 15 at the same point last year.
