(HawaiiNewsNow) - The 2012 Bigs of the Year annual awards are presented to an exceptional Big Brother and Big Sister in the Community-Based program and an outstanding high school student and adult mentor in the School-Based program. All of the Bigs were chosen for demonstrating commitment and dedication to the children of Hawaii by being extraordinary mentors.
Big Sister of the Year Melissa Higgins is committed to her relationship with Little Sister Nalani. Since being matched in 2010, the relationship between the pair has developed into a close sisterhood.
Melissa has been an exemplary role model and friend. She is in constant communication with Nalani, which quickly built trust in the relationship. And with that, Nalani's confidence and self-esteem also started to build. Melissa encourages Nalani to have fun and take chances, but also to maintain good academic standing and focus on attending college. Now in middle school, Nalani is involved with Student Government, performing arts, sports and community service with Melissa right there beside her supporting and helping her along the way.
In 2011, the pair made a couple public appearances on behalf of BBBSH. At a benefit concert in May, Nalani paid tribute to Melissa in her testimony at the Ala Moana Shopping Center Stage. In July, the pair went on an early morning TV show to promote the Bowl For Kids' Sake and Nalani herself raised over $700 in pledges as a participant with Melissa for the annual event. And in the Fall, Nalani organized her classmates to adopt a less fortunate BBBS family for the Holidays.
"Wake Me Up Before You Go Bowl"
Bowl For Kids' Sake is the largest and most important annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu. In 2011, over 1,000 corporate sponsors, employees and their families, civic and community organizations, individual supporters, staff, and volunteers raised $350,000 to help provide one-to-one mentoring for keiki facing adversity on Oahu.
