KAILUA-KONA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Paddlers at the Queen Liliuokalani Long Distance Canoe Race got a special visit from one of Hawaii's endangered species over the weekend.

On Saturday, the seal was spotted swimming near the shore of Kamakahonu Bay. According to the Big Island Video News, the seal was intrigued by the single-hull canoes participating in the race.

Onlookers say the seal followed some of the canoes as they departed from the shore. The seal then came onto the beach, where it has been spotted multiple times.

The Hawaiian monk seal is endemic to Hawaii and is protected by the Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and Hawaii state law.
