AIEA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Honolulu Fire Department search for a missing hiker near the Aiea Loop Trail ended early Monday afternoon after the hiker safely emerged from the trail in Waimalu.
Officials say the 27-year-old man followed a stream and walked out of the trail under his own power in the Waimalu area. The man then caught a ride with a passerby to the highway, where he got out and walked to a nearby Honolulu Police substation.
The man reportedly started hiking on Sunday with three others at Waihee Valley in Windward Oahu. When the group reached the falls, the man stayed behind. The hikers continued communication through text, until about 6:30 p.m. when his phone died.
Firefighters launched a search on Sunday evening but called it off overnight. They resumed efforts at about 6 a.m. Monday.
