Trojans trample Warriors in UH football season opener

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (HawaiiNewsNow) -

USC quarterback and Heisman Trophy hopeful Matt Barkley passed for four touchdown passes, including three in the first half, as the Trojans soured Norm Chow's University of Hawaii coaching debut.

Barkley's 75-yard touchdown toss to Marqise Lee on the first play from scrimmage opened the scoring for USC, and a 20-yard pass to receiver Robert Woods with 5:33 left in the first quarter capped a 99 yard touchdown drive to make the score 14-0.

Los Angeles native Sean Schroeder, making his first start for the Warriors, went 24 of 39 for 208 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, the first of which was returned by USC linebacker Hayes Pullard for a 27-yard touchdown with 3:12 left in the first.

Running back Silas Redd, who made headlines this summer after transferring to USC from Penn State, scored on a 31-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. The junior tailback paced the Trojans on the ground, with 9 carries for 57 yards.

Barkley's third touchdown pass came with 5:00 minutes left in the first half, connecting again with Robert Woods for a two yard score. Barkley completed 17 of his 30 first half passes, totaling 283 yards and three touchdowns.

A 28-yard Andre Heidari field goal as time expired made the halftime score 35-0.

Schroeder and the Warriors responded with a 12 play, 69 yard scoring drive to start the second half, capped off by an 18-yard pass to Scott Harding with 10:11 to go in the third.

Tyler Hadden's ensuing kickoff for the Warriors was returned by Marqise Lee for a 100 yard touchdown, making the score 42-7. Lee's return made him just the second FBS player since 2000 to tally 10 receptions, 150 yards, a receiving touchdown and a return touchdown all in the same game.

A Hadden field goal from 36 yards out made the score 42-10 with 4:40 left in the third quarter, but the Warriors would not score again.

The last points of the game came much the same way as the first did, as a fourth touchdown pass from Matt Barkley, this time an 11-yard strike to sophomore tight end Randall Telfer, made the count 49-10. Barkley finished 24 of 39 for 351 and the four touchdowns.

The Warriors, who were held to negative-4 rushing yards in the first half, were outgained on offense by a 448 to 264 yard margin.

The family of former USC Trojan and longtime San Diego Charger's linebacker Junior Seau was honored during a pre-game ceremony at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
