Elderly Maui woman safe following apartment fire

WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 93-year-old woman is safe after an early-morning apartment fire in Wailuku.

According to the Maui Fire Department, the fire broke at about 3:40 a.m. Friday at the Iao Parkside Condominium on Eha Street.

Upon arrival, fire crews found the front entrance walls on fire.

Officials say neighbors woke up the 93-year-old woman and her dog. She and seven people from other units in the complex safely evacuated.

Firefighters had the blaze under control at 3:55 a.m. The fire was extinguished just before 4:45 a.m.

According to investigators, an outside heat source was discovered. At this time, authorities are investigating the incident to determine what that source was.

A person of interest was questioned, but later released. There are no other individuals of interest at this time.

Damages to the structure and its content are estimated at $2,100.
