2 women injured in Maui head-on collision

MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two women are in the hospital following a head-on collision on Maui's Honoapiilani Highway.

According to officials, a full-sized pickup truck and four-door sedan collided head on at about 1:35 p.m. Thursday just north of the Pali tunnel.

The 46-year-old female driver of the sedan suffered critical head injuries, while her 48-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries to her back and multiple abrasions.

Officials say both victims, who were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, required extrication from the sedan.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

Traffic investigators are at the scene, but have not closed down the highway. Drivers should avoid the area if possible, as traffic is congested and moving slowly.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
