Safeway changes Kona coffee blend labels

HONOLULU (AP) - A national grocer says it has made good on a promise to a group of Hawaii coffee farmers to note the percentage of Kona coffee blends in products sold in mainland stores.

But the Kona Coffee Farmers Association said Thursday Safeway hasn't fully honored its promise.

Last year, Safeway agreed to change the label to add the words "10 percent minimum Kona blend" after the association called for a boycott of the company's 1,700 stores nationwide. Farmers believed the labels were misleading and degraded the reputation of Hawaii's world-famous coffee.

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture also asked Safeway to voluntarily change its label.

The farmers say they continue to see the old labels on Safeway shelves on the mainland. Safeway says there may be some packages leftover from before the change.
