HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - General Growth Properties and Ala Moana Center are partnering with DonorsChoose.org for its Celebrate Schools! campaign from Sept. 10 - Oct. 14. The partnership is designed to shine the spotlight on the importance of a quality education and assist schools and teachers with much-needed supplies and funding. Ala Moana Center is encouraging Hawai'i's teachers to log on to DonorsChoose.org before Sept. 10 and post classroom projects that need funding. Shoppers can help fund these projects and others by signing up to become an Ala Moana Center eVIP member from Sept. 10-Oct. 14. Joining eVIP is free and is the best way to receive information about exclusive promotions, special offers and event announcements from Ala Moana Center.
Current and new eVIP members will receive a donation match code to use on DonorsChoose.org. Members can double their donation, up to $20, by using this code to fund their favorite project. GGP will donate up to $370,000 to match funds donated by shoppers nationwide. Requests range from a film projector and speakers needed for a special education film class in Wai'anae, to art materials for a PreK class in Honolulu. Ala Moana Center will post Hawai'i projects on its Facebook and Twitter pages so fans and followers can receive up-to-date information on funding requests.
On Oct. 13 & 14, during the Center's quarterly sidewalk sale, Celebrate Schools! hits Ala Moana Center's Centerstage. The event will be held from noon-5 p.m. and will feature performances and fundraising efforts by students from, Makalapa Elementary School, Nu'uanu Elementary, Hâlau Ku Mana, Washington Middle School, Fern Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Waimânalo Elementary & Intermediate School, Wahiawâ Middle School and more. During this two-day event, shoppers who did not sign up for eVIP online will have an opportunity to register at Centerstage and nominate a school for a chance to win $20,000. All eligible, nominated schools will be included in the national drawing held on Nov. 12. Ala Moana Center will also donate $1 for each customer who checks in at Ala Moana Center on Foursquare during the Celebrate Schools! event, up to $250.
"Ala Moana Center is excited to launch the Hawai'i initiative of Celebrate Schools," said Scott Creel, group marketing manager. "Shoppers have a unique opportunity to give back to their favorite local schools through this partnership between General Growth Properties and Donorschoose.org," he added.
Started in 2000 by social studies teacher Charles Best, DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need. The website is designed to connect individual donors directly with classrooms in need, grades kindergarten to high school. Teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class. Donors browse project requests and are able to donate any amount. Once a project reaches its funding goal, DonorsChoose.org delivers the materials to the school.
