Fisherman's body found after being swept into ocean

PEPEEKEO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Big Island crews recovered the body of a 37-year-old man who apparently was swept from a rocky shoreline at Flats Beach in Pepeekeo.

The Hawaii County Fire Department says it responded to a report of a possible missing fisherman around 3 p.m. Saturday.

Police Monday afternoon identified the man as 37-year-old Ian Tengan of Hilo, they say he was fishing with a friend when a large wave swept him from the shoreline and under the surf.

HFD immediately began a search, Police officers and Fire Department personnel located him face down in the surf.

He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m.

Police have requested an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
