WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Maui Police Department says a Wailuku man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run death in Waiehu.
Police say Walter Vierra, 43, turned himself in at the Wailuku Police Station Friday morning.
According to police the body of 31-year-old Brandy Mendes of Waiehu was discovered lying along the north bound shoulder of Kahekili Highway just before 6 a.m. Friday, August 17. Her body was found approximately .1 miles south of Kamaile Street.
Police say that through evidence collected at the scene they were able to determine that Mendes had been struck by a dark red 2000 Chevy pick-up truck. The driver of the truck fled the scene without rendering aid or contacting the Maui Police Department.
Following a request for public assistance, police received calls that they day lead to the involved truck and eventually the responsible driver.
The truck was located in the Happy Valley area on Friday, August 17 at 11:53 p.m and was taken by the Maui Police Department as evidence.
Police say Vierra was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide. He was released pending further investigation. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined, the investigation continues.
