Allegiant Air to fly to Hawaii from Phoenix

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Allegiant Travel, which began flying here from Las Vegas and Fresno in June, has added Phoenix to the list of additional cities it will link to Hawaii.

Information on the airline Web site Tuesday showed Allegiant will offer three flights a week from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to Honolulu starting in early February.

Phoenix already has nonstop service to Hawaii from two other carriers, Hawaiian Airlines and US Airways, both of which take off from Phoenix Sky Harbor, the city's main airport.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, which used to be Williams Air Base, is actually in Mesa, 20 miles southeast of Phoenix. Allegiant already serves 13 other cities from there.

Of more importance to Phoenix area travelers than the airport of origination may be price. Allegiant is a discount carrier which posts low fares and make up the revenues with fees. Phoenix hasn't had a discount carrier flying to Hawaii since the collapse and shutdown of ATA Airlines in early 2008.

After launching Hawaii flights from Las Vegas and Fresno in June, Allegiant has made a series of announcements of new service from many other secondary markets in the West, mostly starting in December or February. Most of the markets, like Boise and Spokane, have not previously had direct flights to Hawaii.
