RENO, Nev. – (Hawaii Athletics) The
University of Hawai'i women's soccer team fell to Nevada, 2-0, in the season
opener for both teams Friday night at Mackay Stadium. Nevada scored both its
goals in the first half and held off the Rainbow Wahine in the second half to
pick up the win.
The former Western Athletic Conference rivals met on the pitch for the first
time in their new respective conferences—Nevada in the Mountain West Conference
and UH in the Big West Conference. UH doubled up Nevada in shots (8-4) but it
was the Wolf Pack who would be on the winning end. The Wolf Pack managed just
two shots in the first half, however both found the back of the net.
Chelsea Fricke got the Wolf Pack on the board in the 19th minute
when she scored on a header off a 40-yard set piece. Kori Disarufino gave
Nevada an insurance goal in the 38th minute as the score stood
after a scoreless second half.
The road struggles continue for the Rainbow Wahine who have now dropped 13 of
their last 14 matches on the mainland dating back to the 2010 season. The match
marked the first time since the program's inaugural season in 1994 that UH
opened the season on the road.
UH next heads south to Las Vegas where they will face UNLV on Sunday, Aug. 19.
Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT).
