In the contests to determine which candidates will vie for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Daniel Akaka, Representative Mazie Hirono (106,826 votes, 57.55 percent) leads opponent Ed Case (76,273 votes, 41.09 percent) for the Democratic nomination, with former governor Linda Lingle holding a comfortable lead in the race for the Republican nomination with 34,429 votes, or a whopping 91.81 percent.
