Former Hawaii Governor Ben Cayetano has jumped out to an early lead in the Honolulu mayor's race, leaving the incumbent, Peter Carlisle, as well Kirk Caldwell and Khistina Caldwell DeJean with ground to make up in their bids to become the city's next mayor.
With 14 of 156 precincts reporting, Cayetano has received 38,161, or 44.7% of the votes collected so far, compared to 26,667 votes (31.3%) for Caldwell and 19,951 (23.4%) for Carlisle
Cayetano can claim the mayor's race outright, avoiding another contest in November, with fifty percent of the vote plus one additional vote.
