Elderly Maui man struck by commercial vehicle dies at scene

WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An elderly man from Wailuku is dead after he was struck by a commercial vehicle Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at about 6:45 a.m. when a yellow 2000 Kenworth commercial truck tractor hit the man at the intersection of Eha and Waena Streets.

According to police, the tractor's operator failed to stop at a posted stop sign and turned right on to Eha Street, running over the victim who was in a marked crosswalk.

The victim was identified as Bomani Kim, 87, of Wailuku. He died at the scene.

Police shut down Eha Street between Imikala and Kolu Streets for a portion of the morning. The road has since reopened.

It is unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the incident.

This is Maui's 16th traffic fatality in 2012 compared to seven at the same time in 2011.
