Local Connection: Political Discourse

By: Rick Blangiardi

We have frequently called for a more civil political discourse. It seems right to spotlight some people who are doing the right thing. Republican leaders are speaking out in defense of Huma Abedin.

She is a longtime aide to Secretary of State Clinton - and - she's a Muslim. Congressman Michele Bachmann accused Abedin of infiltrating the government on behalf of extremists.

Her charge is based on the assumption that she must have extremist relatives.

Senator John McCain says it's an unfounded attack on a loyal public servant. Speaker of the house John Boehner also defended Abedin. Bachman's own former campaign manager Ed Rollins compares the charge to McCarthyism.

For those who forget, Joe McCarthy, in the 1950s, falsely accused dozens of people for being communist spies. He ruined their lives while real spies continued to work in the government.

It's not easy to speak out against someone in your own party in the middle of a hard-fought campaign.

But there's plenty to fight over without the distraction of mudslinging.

It's good to see that some key GOP leaders see that.
