HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Paul Cunney, an attorney representing UH punter Alex Dunnachie, has sent a letter to Acting Athletics Director Rockne Freitas asking for a meeting. The request is being sent because Cunney believes the university did not follow due process after Dunnachie's arrest on suspicion of DUI.
The UH Code of conduct states that in a case such as this, a student athlete must be notified of a suspension by the Athletics Director, in writing, within 72 hours after the AD has been notified of the offense. Cunney claims this did not happen, and should thus be allowed to play.
"The ideal is that Alex goes back to the team. He reports on August first, and he's part of the team" said Cunney.
Cunney released an email exchange with Coach Norm Chow in which Chow stated that Alex has not been suspended. However, Dunnachie claims that Chow suspended him for the season on July 13 in a verbal conversation.
University officials did not comment on the case. Coach Chow wrapped up the Mountain West Conference media days in Las Vegas, and is returning to Hawaii.
