HONOLULU
-- Fourteen-year old Honolulu resident Teshya Alo won three gold medals at
the USA Judo Junior Olympic National Championships this weekend in Irving, TX,
taking 1st in the Juvenile B
(ages 14-16), IJF-Junior (ages 14-20), and International Juvenile B (ages
14-16) divisions. She beat 17-year old Junior
Pan-American champion Lauren Baez of Coral Gables, FL, in the IJF-Junior
division, which is the pre-qualifying event for the Junior World Championships.
The incoming Kamehameha Schools freshman
also won the Best Technique Award. She competed in the 57kg weight
class.
Her
12-year old sister Teniya Alo, an incoming 7th grader at Iolani School, won two
gold medals at the tournament, winning the Juvenile A (ages 12-14) and
International Juvenile A (ages 12-14) divisions in the 40kg
weight class. Their 8-year old brother Javen Alo, who is home-schooled,
won a gold medal in the Intermediate 1 (ages
8-10) division
in the 30kg weight class, the tournament's largest bracket with 27 competitors.
Together the Alo siblings, who train at Pearl City Hongwanji Judo Club,
brought home six gold medals.
