HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii is considering permanently banning alcohol at a sandbar off Oahu's windward coast during three-day weekends in the summer.

The proposal would prohibit alcohol possession, use or consumption in a one-square-mile zone of Kaneohe Bay on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.

The ban would also be in effect during any three-day weekend associated with these holidays.

The state Board of Land and Natural Resources will consider the proposal at a meeting on Friday.

The state has been trying to crack down on drinking and illegal drugs at the site after a fatal fight on Memorial Day last year. The fight ended in the death of a 26-year-old man.

The state imposed a similar ban on an emergency basis last year after the death.
