HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An odd odor forced an airline crew to declare an in-flight emergency on Wednesday, not once, but twice.

According to United Airlines, after departing at about 7 a.m., customers and crew of flight 1196 noticed what they described as an electrical odor on board. The captain elected to return to Honolulu, arriving at about 8 a.m., where mechanics did an extensive check and the odor dissipated.

The Los Angeles bound flight re-departed at about 12:15 p.m., and the captain elected to return to Honolulu a second time when the odor returned.

 The airplane landed safely.

"We are accommodating the customers on other flights from Honolulu to Los Angeles this afternoon. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience," said United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson.
