Coast Guard assists in medical evacuation of sailor
JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Coast Guard assisted with the medical evacuation of a 22-year-old sailor from a San Diego-based Navy warship Tuesday night.
A Coast Guard spokesperson says the medical request came in at about 7:45 p.m. At about 8:15 p.m. an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Barbers Point and a diverted HC-130 Hercules aircraft from training on Maui assisted in the rescue aboard the USS Gary.
The sailor was transported to Tripler Army Medical Center at about 10 p.m. in stable condition.
According to officials, the USS Gary is in and around Hawaiian waters in support of the 2012 Rim of the Pacific exercise.
The ship was located 120 miles away from Pearl Harbor at the time of the incident.
Officials say the medical incident was not related to the RIMPAC exercise.
