Driver arrested, 5 teens sent to hospital following North Shore crash

HALEIWA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 19-year-old male was arrested and five teenagers were taken to the hospital following an early-morning vehicle crash on Oahu's North Shore.

According to police, the incident happened at about 1:45 a.m. on Kamehameha Highway near Haleiwa Road.

Officials say a convoy escorted by special duty HPD officers was transporting windmill turbines to the North Shore. The lead escort officer was conducting a road block in the south-bound lane to give the convoy ample room.

Police say an oncoming pickup truck pulled over to the shoulder lane while another oncoming two-door sedan was not slowing down. The sedan crashed into the back of the pickup truck, sending the truck into the police vehicle.

Police arrested a 19-year-old male in the sedan for driving under the influence.

According to Emergency Medical Services, three 17-year-old boys, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl were transported to the hospital in stable condition. The severity of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The HPD officer was not injured in the crash. His vehicle sustained slight front-end damage.
