18-year-old visitor dies after fall from Hana area bridge

HANA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A young man visiting from Arizona died after he fell 40 feet from a bridge along the highway to Hana.

Authorities identified him as 18-year-old Matthew Cote of Mesa, Arizona. He was visiting Maui with his father, Jeff Cote; his father's girlfriend; and the girlfriend's niece.

Maui County fire and police officials said they responded at 1:51 p.m. to a report that a man had fallen from the Makapipi Bridge into the water. The bridge is near milepost 25 on the Hana Highway near Nahiku.

Jeff Cote told authorities that his son had climbed over a guardrail at the bridge to take a picture when he lost his footing and fell 40 feet onto some rocks, and then into a pond below.

A Nahiku resident went into the pond and found Cote submerged in 30 feet of water. It was estimated that Cote was underwater for 40 to 60 minutes before rescue divers were able to retrieve him. He was pronounced dead at the Hana Health Clinic.
