Report: U.S. schools are not challenging

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A new report says school just isn't challenging enough. The Center for American Progress analyzed national and state by state results about the rigors of assignments in elementary, middle, and high school.

Nationally 21 percent of fourth graders say their math work is often too easy. In Hawaii, it was 19 percent. Across the US, 21 percent of 8th graders said the same thing. In Hawaii, it was 22 percent.

And when it comes to reading, 30 percent of 8th graders around the country said they read 5 or fewer pages in school and for homework. In Hawaii, 26 percent said the same thing.

The authors of the report say the US needs to do far more to improve the learning experience.
