Cayetano raises $900,000 for mayoral race

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu mayoral candidate Ben Cayetano is leading the money race, saying his campaign has raised $900,000 so far.

Cayetano's campaign war chest is more than four times the amount raised by incumbent Peter Carlisle.

Thursday is the deadline to file campaign finance reports covering the first six months this year.

"It wasn't easy raising this money," Cayetano said.

Cayetano made the disclosure during a news conference to defend his record from pro-rail groups. The critics accuse him of not paying back $500,000 in excessive campaign contributions from past elections. Cayetano noted many of his current donors are independents and Republicans.

Former Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell has not yet filed his campaign reports. A spokeswoman said Caldwell's campaign plans to file its report with the state Campaign Spending Commission Wednesday night.
