Police investigating attempted Independence Day robbery in Kona

Officials from the Hawaii County Police Department say they are investigating an attempted robbery in Kona that happened on the Fourth of July.

According to police, an individual described as a Caucasian male entered the Chevron gas station on Lako Street and used a handgun to demand money from the cashier, a 46-year old male. The cashier reportedly refused, and the suspect then fled the area in a light colored four dour sedan.

Witnesses described the suspect as being in his late teens to early twenties, with fair complexion and between 150 and 160 pounds, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, shorts, shoes and mirrored sunglasses.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
