HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Tropical cyclone Emilia intensified and was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane late Sunday, while Hurricane Daniel continued to weaken slowly.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking the two cyclones in the eastern north Pacific.

Emilia now has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour with gusts to 92 miles per hour. It was located about 760 miles south of the southern tip of Baja California and was moving to the west-northwest at 10 miles per hour. It is currently no threat to land.

Forecasters expect further strengthening, with Emilia becoming a Category 2 hurricane (sustained winds 96-110 mph) sometime Monday, and a major Category 3 hurricane (111-129 mph winds) on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Daniel was located about 1,850 miles east of Hilo and 1,270 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, and was moving west at 13 miles per hour. The hurricane center said Daniel had maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour with gusts near 115 miles per hour.

Forecasters said Daniel should continue to weaken over the next 48 hours as it moves into cooler waters. It is expected to weaken into a tropical depression when it enters the Central Pacific sometime Wednesday, and is forecast to be a remnant low pressure area south of the islands. Forecasters said moisture from Danielʻs remnants could reach the islands Friday, with the possibility of stronger easterly winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour. Most of the showers will impact the Big Island and Maui, but it's too soon to tell exactly what its effects will be.
