University of Hawai‘i head football coach Norm Chow announced the addition of Football Bowl Subdivision transfers Kapua Sai (Utah) and Sean Schroeder (Duke). Both graduated from their respective schools in three years and are immediately eligible to play for the Warriors due to NCAA graduate transfer rules.
"These two young men have a chance to help us right away," Chow said. "Both are highly skilled at their position and for one reason or another, they didn't see much playing time."
Sai, a 6-foot-4, 315-pound junior, is the older brother of incoming freshman Kiha Sai. Kapua Sai graduated from Saint Louis School , where he was ranked as the No. 13 offensive guard nationally by ESPN. He redshirted at Utah in 2009 and played in four games as a freshman and sophomore.
"I've seen Kapua's development first hand at Utah and he's a guy who has a tremendous amount of upside," Chow said. "(Utah head coach) Kyle Whittingham is a close friend and a tremendous head coach whom I respect a lot. I never felt comfortable until I got his OK. He understood Kapua's decision to return home to be closer to his family. He's a coach who always has his player's best interest in mind."
Schroeder, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior, was a back-up quarterback for the Blue Devils. He redshirted in 2009 and did not see any game action the next two years. Schroeder was highly recruited out of Dana Hills High School in California, where he was ranked as the 29th-best quarterback in the country by ESPN. As a senior, he threw for 2,826 yards and 31 touchdowns with a 65.6 completion percentage and finished his career with nearly every passing record at the school.
"Sean will get his shot in fall camp," Chow said. "From what I've heard about him, he has the tools and can make all the throws. His presence will only make the rest of our quarterbacks better."
The Warriors open fall camp Aug. 2 in preparation for their season-opener against USC, Sept. 1, in Los Angeles, Calif.
