Birds used for cockfighting found dead on Waianae roadside

Nearly a dozen dead birds, believed to be used for cockfighting, have been found on the side of the road in Waianae.

The Humane Society of the United States said the dead birds were discovered in trash bags on Paakea Road.

The organization says it received an anonymous tip about the birds on Wednesday, and notified the Hawaiian Humane Society.

"Whether involving dogs or birds, animal fighting is illegal, it's cruel and it goes hand-in-hand with all the other criminal activities", said Inga Gibson of the Humane Society of the United States.

Meanwhile, Honolulu police booked four men Saturday in Ewa Beach, on cockfighting charges. The suspects all face charges for cruelty to animals and possessing an illegal gaff. They're set to appear in Waianae district court later this month.

It's not known if the arrests were connected to the Waianae incident.
