Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus: Ulu Tree

HONOLULU, (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus is presenting its summer production, Ulu Tree on Friday, June 29th at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, June 30th at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Orvis Auditorium. Performances are open to the public.

Written for HYOC by local composer Herb Mahelona, this youth opera weaves together Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean folktales from Hawaii's plantation era. Relive the stories from our recent past as our students keep this important part of Hawaii's history alive.

Ulu Tree is the 2012 HYOC production of OPERAtunities, a program designed to teach theatre skills to a new generation of performers. Students participated in a three-week intensive workshop, gaining first-hand experience in all aspects of production, including performance with a live orchestra, proper vocal technique and dramatic acting skills, costuming, stage makeup and prop construction.
