Cancer survivorship conference brings caregivers and professionals together

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dozens turned out for the second annual Cancer Survivorship Conference in Waikiki Saturday.

It focused on issues important to cancer survivors and their caregivers.  The event also featured exhibits on the different types of cancers.

The keynote speaker offered tips on how those affected can deal with the disease.

"I think they gave people some tools to understand how to improve their well-being through lifestyle changes, stress control, learning about current research, but not being swayed by every headline they read.  I think also by having hope, they can make a difference in the outcomes they achieve for the rest of their lives", said Dr. Carolyn Gotay of the University of British Columbia.

The American Cancer Society estimates there are more than 57,000 cancer survivors in Hawaii.
