Truck engine sparked Lanikai fire

LANIKAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Investigators say a fire from the engine of a 2000 Ford F-150 sparked a blaze that destroyed a Lanikai home Thursday afternoon.

The truck was parked under a carport, the flames quickly spread to the house, causing $360,000 in damage.

Investigators say the fire started in the trucks engine compartment.

The government recently recalled the truck model due to a fire. Last summer the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that the steel straps holding the fuel tanks of the trucks could corrode and break, leading to a fire risk.

Ford recalled nearly 3 million trucks model years 1997 to 2001.

No word yet on whether the owner of this truck had this defect fixed. Three men who rent the home weren't home at the time.
