Man killed by vehicle on H-3 identified

KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A man who died after being hit by truck on the H-3 freeway has been identified as Sam Nguyen, 47, of Honolulu.

The incident was reported at about 6:20 a.m. Friday in the Halawa-bound lanes of the H-3 near Mokapu Saddle Road.

Witnesses told police that a blue Buick Roadmaster traveling in the Kailua-bound direction crossed over the median and Honolulu-bound lanes, and into the bushes.

A passerby heading toward Honolulu stopped to assist the driver. Witnesses say the driver then jumped over the guard rail into on-coming traffic where he was struck by a white truck.

Police said the victim may be in the Navy. He was transported in extremely critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where he later died.

Initial police reports believed a motorcycle was involved. However, the motorcyclist was one of the bystanders and had placed a helmet down on the side of the road.

Police closed the H-3 while they conducted an investigation. It was reopened around 11 a.m.
