Puppy farm manager in court

KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The man accused of managing the Waimanalo puppy farm was in a Kaneohe courtroom this morning.  David Becker was escorted in wearing handcuffs and ankle shackles.  He faces 153 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

He was assigned a new public defender.  Attorney Jin Tae Kim told the judge he needed time to review the 1,500 documents and photos.  The judge agreed and granted a three week continuance.  Becker will be back in court July 12 to decide if he wants a jury trial.

The Hawaiian Humane Society seized 153 dogs from the Waimanalo farm last February. Photos showed the dogs living in kennels covered with feces. Many of the dogs had health and dental problems.

If convicted the penalties are $306,000 fine and a year in prison.

Becker was extradited from Las Vegas earlier this month on a special Governor's warrant which had never been used in Hawaii.  He remains in custody unable to make the $200,000 bail.
