BIG ISLAND WILDFIRE
There are some road closures on the Big Island this morning due to two wildfires raging in Pahala. Hawaii 11 is closed right now, from mile marker 46 to Kamani street. The largest on the makai side of the road has charred 4-thousand acres so far. The flames have come close to the Ka'u Hospital and damaged some macadamia nut orchards. Ramsay Wharton will have the latest live on Sunrise.
SENTENCING FOR TAXI DRIVER BEATING
Happening today, a second man found guilty in the 2010 beating death of Honolulu taxi cab driver Ty Tang will learn his fate. 19 year old Kilani Derego was convicted in February of second degree murder. He faces life in prison with the possibility of parole. Last year, 19 year old Michael Robles was sentenced to 20 years in prison for manslaughter. Tang, a hard working father of two, was beaten to death after driving Derego and Robles from Waikiki to Waipahu on May 1, 2010. It was his 41st birthday.
UH CHANCELLOR DESIGNATE LIVE ON SUNRISE
Tom Apple has a lot to prove as the new UH Chancellor. He takes over the position in the middle of a controversy over sabbatical pay for outgoing Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw. Watch the fireworks that unfolded during Teri Okita's interview with Hinshaw when a long time professor went off. You can see that story here. HAWAIIAN ADDS FLIGHTS TO BRISBANE
As we reported yesterday on Hawaii News Now, Hawaiian Airlines will start flying to a second city in Australia. Starting November 27th, there will be three flights a week to Brisbane. Howard Dicus has more on the potential tourism boost from Down Under.
TARGET COMING TO MAUI
Here's another interesting business story from our partner the Star Advertiser. Target has committed to opening its first Maui store at a project in the works called Puunene Shopping Center. If a deal goes through, it could potentially open in 2014.
