AIEA ROAD REOPENED AFTER POWER POLE FIRE
This just in: Kaimakani Street between Moanalua and Ulune in Aiea has just reopened after a power pole fire that closed the road overnight. We'll have updates on this situation and other traffic hotspots on Sunrise.
WIND FUELS FIRES
Strong winds fanned the flames of 3 fires burning near Pahala on the Big Island. Some of the effects? The Ka'u Hospital closed its ER and evacuated 15 long term care residents. Ash from the fire now has to be cleaned out before it can reopen. Roughly one thousand acres have burned and smoke has blanketed the region. The strong winds also toppled about six ironwood trees in Waimea yesterday.
On Maui, two fires damaged three homes and forced the closure of a state forest reserve. Residents on Hapapa road were evacuated. No homes are currently being threatened.
We can expect winds to start backing off today. Ben Gutierrez says it will be less breezy as the day goes on. He's also tracking surf on the East side.
MEMORIAL FOR HAWAII TEEN
A memorial and vigil has been set for a Hawaii born teenager who moved to Texas and committed suicide after being bullied. In a note left behind, 16 year old Brandon Elizares told his family he was sorry, but he couldn't make it anymore. He took pills that killed him. Family and friends say he was harassed because he was gay. Elizares will be buried in Hawaii. His family is holding a remembrance walk and vigil for him this Saturday at 5 PM at Ala Moana Beach Park.
SPYING ROOMATE TO GO FREE
Today, the New Jersey man jailed for using a webcam to spy on his gay college roommate could be freed today. Dharun Ravi has served 20 days of a 30 day sentence. Ravi's roommate, Tyler Clementi committed suicide after Ravi streamed video of Clementi and another man kissing.
