PEARL CITY (HawaiiNewsNow) - Some determined drivers put their skills to the test Saturday. Twenty of them headed to Leeward Community College for the Truck and Passenger Championships. The competition tests drivers' ability to move large trucks, tractor trailers, and buses. Organizers say the contest was originally meant for trucks only, but this year, there's an emphasis on passenger carrier vehicles. "We have a lot of tour bus drivers, minibus, school bus special education vehicles. Passenger carriers, they are filling up the day for us, and they don't have a national event to go to so I really appreciate them having an interest in the program", said Hawaii Transportation Association spokesperson Gareth Sakakida. The competition also includes a written exam and safety inspection. The winner of the contest will represent Hawaii at a national competition later this year.
