HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Matt Ma never finished higher than third at the Manoa Cup before. Saturday, he carried the coveted trophy home with him after beating Nick Matshushima 4&3 in the finale.
"This is a huge step for me and and it's an honor to be on the same list as all the guys who came before me," said Ma."It was a battle all week and i'm happy it's over. I give credit to Nick because he played well and gave it a great effort."
Ma led Matsushima by as many as 5-holes but Matsushima won 3-holes in a row, trimming that deficit to just two after the 30th hole of the day.
Ma (a coach for Iolani's golf program) then bounced back on the 31st, after Matsushima conceded the hole, giving Ma a 3-up lead.
On the 32nd hole, Ma knocked in a 3-foot putt for birdie to extend his lead to 4-up.
Ma's victory was clinched on the 33rd hole of the day when both golfers halved the par-5 15th.
