Water main break causes flooding at War Memorial Sports Complex

KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An aged water main broke underneath War Memorial Gymnasium in Kahului, flooding gym offices and hallways with enough water to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The break also cut off water for the surrounding sports facilities last night. The water main services the entire War Memorial Sports Complex, and the football stadium, as well as multiple soccer and little league fields, remain without water.

Maui County work crews say the water main break was caused by someone hitting a fire hydrant in the Maui Lani subdivision at around 5:30 p.m. The crash sent pressurized water through a series of aged pipes that could not handle the sudden activity, and water began entering one of the gym offices through the floor at approximately 11:30 p.m.

Preliminary clean up cost are estimated at $200,000, but that figure  does not take into account water damaged equipment. The water did not flood the gymnasium itself, and the gym's basketball court remains untouched.
